f*** you

(i hope to say it, one day, out loud to j.)

scenario:
thesis lodged on december 8th, 2008

one month later:

e.: hi j., i called the academic services before i left on holidays and they told me that they had send you the copy. only after coming back from holidays i saw your email about receiving it. and i was wondering how are the corrections going? have you heard back from prof. t.? what is the provisonal date? best regards and happy 2009.

five days later (i.e. january 7th, 2009):
j.: i'm still away and didn't take the thesis with me - i know what it contains (mostly anyway). haven't heard anything from k. he's probably not even looked at it yet. if i'm right about how things work in ireland, then it could take a looong time...

today:
e. to the ucd graduate office: dear mrs. n., i lodged my masters thesis on december 8th, 2008 and i was wondering if there is an official and/or provisional date that the examiners have to comply with for the degree to be awarded. i've started my phd at the university of basel (switzerland) and i need to know when i'll get my masters degree as i can't enroll officially to the program without it. i wrote to my principal supervisor (who is also my internal examiner), asking him for details, i.e. a provisional date, and he replied that he didn't look at my thesis yet, he didn't hear anything back from the external examiner and i quote: "if i'm right about how things work in ireland, then it could take a looong time", which is not very comforting. i just need to know, if possible, how long it will take so i can get back to the academic services of the university of basel with more consistent and reliable informations. best regards.

a few hours later:

ucd graduate office: i checked with assessment and your thesis went out in mid december. the extern would have it for about a month now. they told me that the university has an expectation of two months assessment time for a thesis. however, this is not communicated to the external examiner. they also said that it is expected that the supervisor/internal examiner would liaise sufficiently with the extern to move the process along. i hope this information helps. regards, g.

right after:

e. to j.: i've contacted g. n. enquiring about my thesis assessment and it seems that "unofficially" a two months assessment time is expected by ucd (i've copy/paste her reply below). can i kindly ask you to contact prof. t. and see what will be the expected time to get back to you with corrections/decision? i know that i'm not in position to ask anything but i need to know a provisional date since i'm on hold here at the university of basel. regards.

i hate kissing arses...
