"goals for self" by prof. robert kok

"whenever one attempts to engage in cooperative activity with others, a number of factors influence the quality of the interaction, and strongly affect the result. in my view, the quality of a work-related interaction in the university milieu is largely determined by three factors: emotional, intellectual, and cultural compatibility between parties. thus, anyone contemplating cooperative activity must not only ensure that the person with whom they plan to work together is a good match in the appropriate intellectual/ technical sphere, they should also ascertain that s/he is of a compatible emotional and cultural type. this is especially so for anyone contemplating graduates studies [...].
no matter what, a person's basic beliefs, attitudes, instinctual drives, inherent capacities, cultural norms, etc. strongly influence their motivation, their actual behaviour, and how they interact with others. mine certainly do, and i believe that one should be clear and up-front in stating one's goals, opinions, values, and attitudes, so as to minimise friction and optimise cooperation. of course, that in itself is a statement of attitude and belief and may be considered by some to be less than cautious, or even outright foolish. to me, however, it is an essential stance if one is to achieve what i consider to be a university.
"

e esta declaração vai ser o meu parágrafo introdutório aos "agradecimentos".
